The C.A.R.E.S. (Conservation, Awarenes, Recognition, Encouragement and Support) program, founded and led by the influential aquarist and conservationist Claudia Dickinson, is aimed to establish and maintain a reliable source of base stock conservation priority at-risk species within the aquarium hobby while forming an information network between aquarists, scientists, and conservationists. The CARES Conservation Priority Species at Risk List currently includes 165 cichlid species as evaluated. Those species are listed here together with links to their Cichlid Room Companion species profile and a C.A.R.E.S. status page. Classifications for the Conservation Priority Species at Risk list include Extinct (EX), Extinct in the wild (EW), Critically endangered (CR), Endangered (EN), Vulnerable (VU), Near threatened (NT). Actions being taken on the species include Conservation Dependent (CD) and Conservation Priority (CP).
